Assassin’s Creed (2007) Xbox 360 Review

In 2014, I got my first computer that could play games on Steam. The first games I played were Portal 1 & 2, Batman: Arkham City, and the first Assassin’s Creed. 10 years later I got a wild hare to revisit Assassin’s Creed.

Surprisingly, it’s way more engaging than I remember. The narrative, the gameplay, and the atmosphere have undoubtedly influenced many modern games.

Simplistic structure that facilitates for an immersive experience, especially paired with its impressive graphics (for the time) and haunting atmosphere. Jesper Kyd’s soundtrack adds a lot.

You really feel like an Assassin in the 12 the century. Movement is fun. Controls on PC are archaic, but on console, it works great.

The story is incredibly engaging. I love the mystery surrounding Abstergo in the modern day. Al Mualim’s conspiracy unfolds brilliantly in the past. The melding of the two plots works seamlessly. The ending is a brutal cliffhanger that I’m a bit mixed on.

Most of the game is a 9/10, but there are some big issues that bring it down for me. Repeated voice lines from NPCs can get annoying, ruining the immersion. Animations can get wonky. Stealth mechanics work for the most part, but at times you get caught seemingly out of nowhere. On particular missions, especially when you have to take down 5 targets at once, at seems almost impossible not to get caught.

Objectives are mostly uninteresting. I don’t mind it too much, since the repetitive nature allows for a more seamless playstyle, but it definitely hinders the potential for a replay.
