Final Destination (2000) 4/5
Final Destination was a film I had heard about a lot as a kid, but wasn’t allowed to watch it until I was much older. When I finally did watch it, I loved the concept a lot.
I’ve always loved interesting concepts like this. Take a bunch of people who avoid death and then kill them one-by-one, with some twists and turns along the way. Sure, a couple of the sequels may have gotten a bit stale, but the original proved to be unique and while it may be a bit cheesy (considering it was the early 2000’s), it’s still a fantastic slasher-thriller.
Final Destination 2 (2003) 3.5/5
Final Destination 2 is a great sequel to the original. It continues with the first film’s premise, while incorporating a couple of new elements and twists and turns without being boring or annoying.
The inclusion of a character from the first film helps easily tie the films together, which the future sequels can have a bit of a problem with.
One of the franchise’s strong suits is its ability to have extremely entertaining deaths. This one takes those deaths to a new level and has some of the best in the series.
I don’t like this one as much as the first one, but it is a close second. Definitely give it a watch if you’ve seen the first one.
Final Destination 3 (2006) 2.5/5
Final Destination 3 is the first time in the franchise where things start to feel a bit stale, but I can’t say that I didn’t still enjoy this one.
Compared to the first two, the characters aren’t nearly as likable, though their relationships are a bit more solid. The deaths are more innovative.
The major accident at the beginning was a lot more small-scale, but I don’t think that detracted from the film at all.
This could be considered the start of the downfall of the franchise, but considering I really, really enjoy the 5th film, it’s more accurate to say that this is just the humpday of the Final Destination Franchise.
Watch it if you’ve seen the first two and enjoyed them.
The Final Destination (2009) 1.5/5
Oh boy.
This film isn’t good. I forgot the characters names after I watched it. Many of the characters are unlikable assholes, the first big accident was weird, the deaths were good – that’s about it.
The major part of this film that I actually enjoyed, occurred in the last 20 minutes. I won’t spoil it (in case you want to watch it yourself), but a major twist happens and it gets super interesting.
I’d say watch this film if you want to do a Final Destination marathon, but other than that, don’t watch it.
Final Destination 5 (2011) 4.5/5
I think Final Destination 5 might be my favorite Final Destination film. If not, it’s neck-and-neck with the original.
Unlike the fourth film, this one has some really likable characters, similar to the first two films. The deaths involved in this one were extremely elaborate and interesting and the ending involved a gigantic bamboozle that I still get goosebumps over.
Made 11 years after the first one, you can see how much the franchise has changed and grown and while the fourth one was bad, the fifth one made the franchise fresh again.
I almost want a new Final Destination film. Almost.
Definitely watch this one if you enjoyed the first, but watch the first one – first.
